With summertime’s vacations, reunions, camps, and other activities, it’s easy for dental hygiene habits to fall by the wayside. Here are some refreshers to help get back to basics.

Flossing is extremely important. Floss once a day, for 2-3 minutes each session. If conventional floss doesn’t work well for you, there are many other options to try. Some examples include specialty floss for sensitive gums, pre-strung flossers, dental picks, water flossers, or other interdental cleaners specifically designed for this purpose. For alternative interdental cleaner options, call Riverside Dental at 904.355.5531. Dr. Michael Spencer and our team will be happy to help you find the interdental cleaner that best suits your health needs.

Make sure you brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes each session. If you are having trouble staying on track or spending enough time on your teeth, try setting a timer or playing your favorite song for 2 minutes. Use short, tooth-wide strokes in a back-and-forth motion and gentle pressure. Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months–sooner if it looks frayed or worn, or becomes contaminated.

Mouthwash can also be a good addition to the oral hygiene routines of some people. Mouthwash should not be given to children under 6 years old, and should be used with caution thereafter. Do not swallow large amounts of mouthwash, as many contain alcohol and could lead to intoxication. If you need to avoid alcohol for any reason, talk with your dentist for alcohol-free recommendations.
