Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that has been scientifically proven to protect and strengthen your tooth enamel. While especially important in children, our team at Riverside Dental is pleased to offer fluoride to patients of all ages. We generally utilize fluoride during your routine dental cleaning and exam, and we have additional fluoride supplementation for patients who are especially susceptible to decay or disease. The most common way to use fluoride is through topical application, meaning it is applied directly to your teeth, whether through toothpastes, mouthwashes, gels, or varnishes. Fluoride in pill form, known as systemic fluoride, is also available.

Fluoride works in one of the two ways. When your tooth enamel is still growing, fluoride bonds with it to strengthen it permanently. Once you reach adulthood, fluoride becomes a protective shield, preventing decay from lingering on your tooth’s surface and causing damage.
